Commercial Activity
Houston Intercontinental is thriving! The Houston Intercontinental commercial core is the hub of business activity in the north Houston region, however the geographic economic base is much broader than just Houston Intercontinental. Extensive business activity is spread throughout most of the North Houston Houston Intercontinental area. Bush Intercontinental Airport, most of the Sam Houston Parkway corridor, the Interstate 45 corridor, and the Rankin Road area are all part of this business activity network. Local commercial development first occurred along Interstate 45, south of Sam Houston Parkway. The 1976 opening of Houston Intercontinental Mall provided north Houston with its initial commercial focus. Before long, numerous large office buildings were being built locally.
Based upon this new commercial activity, and upon demand from Bush Intercontinental Airport, large hotel complexes were constructed by some of the major lodging business companies. The region also became popular as a good location for light industrial businesses. Much of the industrial development occurred in the Sam Houston Parkway and Rankin Road areas as well as along West Hardy and Greens Road, east of the Hardy Toll Road.
